Overview

We were told to try this sushi place by a few people and because it is closer to home we gave it a try. The restaurant website touts fresh fish and tantalizing fusion dishes. The website states “Grand Opening” and their restaurant walls needed a paint job so we thought they had just opened. It turns out they have been open about a year. We weren’t worried about the decor because a lot of good restaurants lack it. The service was great and they were accommodating to our toddler and very friendly. The food was presented well and the tableware was fancy.

Value

Not what was expected. We heard great things about this place but it wasn’t worth our money.

3 most popular dishes

The hostess recommended the Sexy Shrimp appetizer, Blue Marlin, Volcano, and Lollipop rolls.

What I ordered

We ordered everything recommended by the hostess.

Food quality

We found that everything we ordered had a lot of fake crab salad in it. When we order sushi, we expect it to contain fresh fish and a few complimentary ingredients. We do not mind a little crab salad but there was more of it than anything else in all the dishes we ordered. It was just too overpowering and not the fresh flavor we would expect from a recommended sushi restaurant. To give a fair review, it appears there are a lot of dishes without it so it’s possible the waitress recommended the wrong dishes.

Ambiance

Blue Marlin has the potential to be a great hole in the wall but for now, it just has holes in its walls…and marker and the floor has been painted and is chipping and there’s an unusually high step to get to the dining area. The restaurant could use some sprucing up but you can tell they’re trying.

What I liked most

I liked that they strayed from the norm with their lollipop sushi roll. It is savory but has strawberries and comes wrapped in cucumber instead of rice and seaweed. Great presentation as well for most of their dishes except for the Volcano Roll.

What I disliked most

Their high usage of imitation crab. I could see them going far if they omit it from their menu.
